Gartner Hype Cycle: Identity-First Security Reaches the Plateau

Back to Thinking
AnalystGartner Hype Cycle for Identity and Access Management · 2024

Key Finding

Once Gartner labels a practice mainstream, board-level questions about it follow. "Are we identity-first?" is the question; the answer requires architecture, not a tool.

Gartner's Hype Cycle for IAM tracks named technologies and practices through innovation-trigger, peak, trough, slope-of-enlightenment, and plateau-of-productivity. The 2024 edition placed Identity-First Security at or near the plateau — meaning the practice is now expected, not aspirational. Identity Threat Detection & Response, Identity Fabric Immunity, AI-Agent Identity, and Continuous Identity Posture Management appeared in earlier slope positions, each gathering vendor and analyst momentum through 2025.

For identity-architecture practice the value of Hype Cycle placement is not the position itself but what it signals about the boardroom conversation. When Identity-First Security is named as a mainstream practice, the question coming back is "are we identity-first?" — and the answer requires an architecture document, a measurable posture programme, and a defensible roadmap. Tools alone do not answer the question.
